The aims and objectives of the Scottish Association for Cleft Lips and Palates (SCALP) Charity are:

  • To ensure that children born with clefts in Scotland receive the best available care
  • To ensure that Scotland contributes to research into the cause of cleft lip and palate
  • Enable research to find better ways to improve the quality of cleft care

In some areas of cleft lip or cleft palate research, such as 3 dimensional imaging and gene-environment interaction, Scotland is at the forefront of European and global research into these conditions.

The ultimate scientific and humanitarian objective in this field would be to prevent cleft lips and palates occurring. We trust that SCALP will contribute to both the drive for prevention and to improving the quality of life for those children who are born with this condition.
